The next day, the Scoobies took their lunch hour in the library, not eating. Just staring at each other, and at the clock. Frankie couldn’t stop tapping her foot, and Hailey wore her black hair up in two space buns secured by long red ribbons and stuck the ends of both ribbons in her mouth until they were all wet and frayed.

“When can we go to the house?” Spike asked. He stood at the head of the table with his arms crossed.

“Well, we do have half a day of school left,” said Frankie.

“Can’t we ditch it?” the librarian moaned. “It’s not like any of you are going to be able to pay attention to Biology 101 or the War of the Roses.”

“They don’t really teach the War of the Roses here,” Hailey said. “Do you even know what classes we take?”

“No. Why should I?”

Hailey rolled her eyes and turned to Sigmund, who was, as usual, poring over a book. “Sig…” She walked her fingers up his arm flirtatiously. “Do you still have more reading to do?”

Sigmund looked up and smiled at her distractedly. “I’m sorry. But this spell…kind of demands all of my attention.” He patted Hailey’s hand and went back to reading. Hailey shrugged and went back to chewing on her ribbon ends, but Frankie’s eyes narrowed.

Spike stepped away from the table.

“That’s it. You lot can waste your time in school if that’s what you want. But I’m leaving.” He tugged at his tweed lapels. “I’m going to jump down a manhole and get out of this rubbish.”

“Don’t want Buffy seeing you in tweed, huh?” Jake said. “I get it. That might be jarring. But what about your old face?”

Spike’s hands flew to his cheeks.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine!” Frankie interjected. She reached over to whack Jake. “You look great. Good, even. Besides, I bet she’ll like it.”

“Yeah,” Hailey added. “You’re, you know…age-appropriate.”

Spike relaxed and fixed them all with a glare. “Good day, Scoobies. I’ll see you at the Rosenbergs’.”

They watched him walk out, ignoring students who needed library help as he went. When one of the freshmen asked him where the printed periodicals were, he simply extended a palm and said, “No.”

“You know,” Hailey mused. “I never really thought about the fact that Willow’s glamour was only on his face. Like, he has a forty-year-old face on a hot, toned vampire bod. That is too weird.”

Jake snorted and Frankie smiled, but Sigmund seemed to not have heard. He should have been the one to arch an eyebrow and grin. Hailey, my darling, he should have said, please don’t make us all imagine what Spike looks like naked. But instead he didn’t say anything. He didn’t even look at her.

“Well.” Hailey got up and found a pair of scissors, then cut off the ruined ends of her red ribbons. “I have to admit I don’t feel like staying anymore either. You guys wanna ditch for coffee and pastries?”

“We’re going to get caught,” Jake cautioned. “Ever since she found the fish-monster leftovers in the pool drain, Principal Jacobs has been watching this place like a hawk.
